Hey there! I've been spending a bit of time on the forums recently to catch up on a bit of what's been happening in Corbacraft, and during my adventures in this little corner of the world-wide web, I've noticed a few small things on the forums that could perhaps be adjusted. These are mostly personal preference, however a few could be noted as definitely beneficial to the website. I figured I would chuck everything into one post to keep from gumming up the board, so sorry if there is any confusion.

Keep in mind these are all obtainable requests through XenForo's admin panel, but some may take a bit of time to complete, as well as be extremely small changes that may not warrant immediate action.
    • Create a favicon: Have you ever looked at a tab at the top of your browser and noticed a small icon? Twitter has their bird logo, YouTube has their play button, Google has their rainbow G inside a white circle, and so on. This icon is known as a favicon. Having a favicon will give the website a sleeker look, give people a visual cue for their bookmarks, and make it more memorable. I would recommend a 70x70 favicon for the forums since most people will be using Chrome or Firefox to view the forums. However, lots of new mobile formats have opened up and require a need for different sizes. You can use the favicon generator /HERE/ to convert your image into different sized favicons if you're having trouble getting things exactly perfect.
    • Update thread prefixes for the server changes: Now that Sophus and Lothar are goners, I think it may be time to update thread prefixes. While creating an introduction post, I found that there were many more options for servers to select, but absolutely none were truly helpful to use given the downsize of the server. I recall putting a lot of time into custom-picking how prefixes work in every individual board, so I have a soft spot for them and hate to say these server prefixes are defunct and should be done away with completely. However, it may not be necessary to keep server prefixes around much more.
    • Lock ability to create polls in some boards: Simply enough, while creating threads in some boards (specifically in the introductions board for sure), I noticed that you can create polls in the even when it would be inappropriate to do so. It isn't urgent, since people seem to respect when and where to use polls, however I would suggest looking into locking that ability off from some areas.
    • Update forum bio: When you search Corbacraft on google, the results come up with two quick links: one to the forums, and one to the voting links. The link to the forums however, simply states "Forum software by Xenforo". Off the top of my head, I'm unsure exactly how to update this information, however I believe it would be a good idea to look into the admin control panel and see if there is an option to update the website's description. I'm certain there is a way, it simply is a matter of trial and error to figure out how to make it work.
    • Update forum bio pt. 2: The voting quick link on Google is a bit more appropriate, but it looks like it's just the content of Gigi's old thread, which cuts off into "The issue ..."... Feels a bit inappropriate. Perhaps have a staff member beef up her first sentence so people aren't greeted by staff addressing issues before a user even gets into the website.
    • Litebans: Perhaps the link is broken, however the Bans button in the navigation bar sends users to a 404 page. If Litebans is defunct, I would suggest removing the button, or editing the link to wherever public records of player punishments can be found.
    • Voting button: Again feeding into Gigi's old voting links post, the whole post feels outdated. The link edited in at the bottom doesn't appear to work for me, and the empty promises of being fixed by an admin shortly feel a bit off as well. I would advise creating an updated post, and having somebody turn the vote button into an optional dropdown menu with a link to all of the voting websites as well.
    • Popup colors: If you've ever tried to update your profile picture, attach an image to a post, or insert a link into your text, you've noticed that the popup window has a bright red theme, while Corbacraft's forums are blue primarily (excluding small accents like the "Create Thread" button). This harsh contrast can be offputting to quite a few users, and I personally think it would be beneficial to make it more representative of the rest of the website.
    • Server IP shouldn't be an image: I am all for having the IP big and bold on the main page, however I do not think it should be an image. I would argue that using text is better, so users can copy/paste it into their Minecraft application and cut down on risk of misspelling the IP and getting complaints or loss of potentially new players. Perhaps if an image is still wanting to be used, at least have a smaller copy of the IP in text underneath the image.

Well... That turned out to be a lot longer than I expected, sorry folks. Anyways, those are my ideas for minor changes to the forums, however there is one significant issue that can only be addressed by Ergo, or anyone else with access to the website server and its host. This one can still be considered minor, however for the sake of protecting everyone's personal information, as well as proving that this website is legitimate to make it easier for people to weed out malicious fake links in posts, this is a big deal.
    • Set up SSL: Have you ever typed out the http:// and https:// into a url and wondered what the difference was? HTTPS is enabled on most web servers nowadays to prove that their website has an SSL certificate. You'll notice that in the far left of your URL bar right now, the red message states this website is not secure. This is because there is no SSL certificate encrypting personal information or vouching for this website's legitimacy. This leaves the website and its users extremely vulnerable to data piracy about personal information like emails and passwords. I'm not an expert setting up SSL certificates, however as far as I know this will be an Ergo-only task.

Of course right after I post this, I go to the home page and notice the Twitter Feed section of the side bar, as well as the overall lack of functioning feed in it. Adding on to this post, another small task for the forum admins could be to embed a live feed of Corbacraft's tweets. I recall doing this in the past, and can look into getting the code block set up if you would like. Similarly, one of these for the Corbacraft YouTube channels would be awesome too, and again I can try to dig up the old code I used for implementing it in the old website.

EDIT: I recall bringing this up with staff, but I also just remembered I had a wild time yesterday spending about an hour optimizing and resizing my profile picture before the website finally took it. There is a statement that files cannot exceed 50KB, however most 500x500 (Recommended size in the same page) icons are well above that. The icon I currently use was 126KB optimized at 500x500. When downsizing, I got the file to 26KB, and the uploader was still fighting tooth and nail, stating the file was still too big. Perhaps some more transparency into other restrictions for icons, as well as upping the file limit would be beneficial. I would say maybe 100-150KB would be a good maximum size.

Thank you for this post, the Forums definitely need these updates! I especially like what you said about profile pictures, I too had a lot of pain optimizing mine. It sadly ended up being far worse quality than what I wanted, but I couldn't change increase it further. Anyways, here are a few suggestions that I feel should be added as well!

    Update the New Posts Column-
The New Posts column is vital in the fact that posts there get the most attention. And seeing how you can only bump once, for a post to gain any traction at all it must stay there for several days. Since Staff rarely go digging for older threads that are awaiting responses, many threads rarely see the light of day again, and are eventually archived. So, to fix this, I propose that the number of threads displayed is increased from 5 to 10. Also, the "Recent Posts" section should show the latest post by a member in a thread, instead of the original post. Finally, Phillia Applications should not show up in this column! They bury every other thread, and it is very disheartening to see your threads lose traction because of it.

    Enlarge the Forums Format-
There used to be a suggestion for this, but unfortunately it was archived due to no Staff response. Getting to the point, the text, links, sections... Everything on the Forums is a bit too small! Everything is somewhat hard to see, and although you can zoom in... This can mess up your zoom on other tabs, and is annoying to do so. This suggestion can be easily fixed, and definitely is more of a complaint, but as someone who spends a lot of time here... It would be a good addition to see!

@Finn_The_Hobbit I'm super glad to see you're in support of the idea.

I also agree that perhaps the recent posts sidebar could be a bit longer, however 10 feels a bit excessive. It seems like we don't see as much activity on the forums anymore, so maybe around 6-8 posts would be ideal?

Personally, I don't have a problem with the size of the text, however I understand those with impaired vision or smaller screens may be at a disadvantage. I believe your idea to increase font size is reasonable, however I've also seen some backlash from staff and other users. In case this idea does not pass, might I advise increasing your font size in Chrome, or using an extension to increase text size for a selected set of pages?

Alongside this idea to increase font size, if some users have issues with it changing, might I suggest to the staff an alternative theme for the website? If I remember correctly, users can individually activate and deactivate themes that staff open up to them in their settings page. Lots of websites offer variations for users with visual impairment, like high contrast, colorblind, "night mode", and larger text options.

EDIT: It would also be nice if we could get a more streamlined mobile format. The website functions to a degree, however I had to request a desktop view of the site to even log in.

Hey! Just saw you on here and I'm really interested in technology, so it's nice to see someone who knows a lot about networking. I would really like to know more sometime and all of that.
    Onto the topic...

I would really like to see some consistancy with something on this server. One thing that I think should be revived is monthly-top voting! I think that not only would it increase the amount of votes corba gets (which would attract more people to play the site), but it would also hype the community up more to do certain things!

Hopefully not just Ergo does it (because he has a life and things), but it would be nice if any of the admins can distribute this out...

Maybe the top 10 voters get rewards?
    1st gets a $25
    2nd gets $20
    3rd gets $10
    and...
rest can get something cool.. maybe like keys?
It's pretty easy to record down, hopefully.. but just something to think about

    Hey Flash (@FlashTurtle),

I'm glad to see you have an interest in networking! I used to be the old forums manager before I resigned a couple years back, so most of this was just me spewing off some projects I had planned to do, or had done prior to the forums getting an overhaul in recent time. If you've ever like to chat about web design and Networking however, feel free to private message me here on the forums! I've always had a passion for forums, so applying myself into them and spreading that passion to others any way I can is truly fun for me.

Anyways, your idea about top voting is definitely a good one! I remember Corbacraft actually used to do this, however I didn't realize it had stopped. Adding Corbacraft to some more voting/server advertisement websites, as well as providing a large incentive to really push users to vote daily may increase the Network's ability to get it's name out there. Personally, voting rewards alone aren't enough for me to feel the incentive to vote, as my presence in-game is more towards a social aspect than the competitive or materialistic aspects other players gear towards. Re-introducing top voter rewards would be an extra little push for like-minded players.

Funny enough, I came online to message Ergo a proposal for advertising the server, so I'm amused to see your addition to this thread is also about further getting the server out there. Great minds think alike!

    Cheers,
    Reg

    Heya Reg

Yea look like some fun ideas, i'm just gonna leave this one here for everytime me or Rose have time to add some of this stuff.
The backend of a website is always fun to look at but it takes a bit of time since we'll have to look at where to find this stuff as well haha.

    Hey @Matthias1266 ,

Thanks for getting back to me on this, I'm excited to see some of the changes roll out with time! If you need any help finding things please let me know. I think I still have a good portion of the control panel memorized... I spent way too much time playing in it. I can also pull up a XenForo demo and run through things on the control panels to get the exact information and screenshots if that's more your speed.

On another note, I had to reset my password, and the email ended up bouncing into my spam folder. I would advise changing the default email address from corbacraft@gmail.com (what is currently being used). When automated messages come through a "personal" account, email providers (gmail especially) will try to block them. XenForo recommends the @website.com part of the email is the website URL. Off the top of my head I believe to fix this, I eventually changed the default to admin@corbacraftmc.com or something along the lines? Not sure if it will still take to the email address without an email account truly associated to it, so you may need to chat with Ergo about setting up an email suite with whoever he bought the URL through. Always worth it to make a couple dummy accounts and test things out during quiet hours, though.

If you can get the emails to send properly to all users without it going into their spam, you could also set up admin emails that send to everybody to alert them to announcement posts or weekly email newsletters. This may in fact combo well with Az's idea for a newsletter over /HERE/.

Edit: I'm a dummy and forgot to ping Matt

EDIT 2: As another suggestion, I believe it may be beneficial to assign an existing staff member who is active on the forums and keep tabs on making sure threads are properly titled, locked, archived, and updated with prefixes as needed. I've seen a few boards where threads are intended to be locked after use, and while very old ones have been, ones in recent months haven't. Alongside this, some indescriptive thread titles causes confusion and goes against the rules of the board in some cases. It isn't a very big deal, but keeping tabs on it promotes neatness (which reflects the server and it's management much better) and allows players an example as to how they should make their threads look to make staff's life easier over a long-term period.

EDIT 3: I'm noticing an influx of users putting their legal names in, and for their own privacy and potential misunderstanding of what is expected, it should be noted somewhere on the sign-up page to avoid using a full legal name.

Definitely happy to see this, I hope voting really gets reworked!
Other ideas for voting: "Vote party" Across all words or whever it happens.
When the vote reaches (x), everyone gets a crate key.. and I know voting nothing in philia, but I'd love to see something cool and balanced be used or voting..

Maybe a way to place keys in the "vote" world. Placing keys is like giving "Hype" to ideas and all of that jazz.

Thank you for all of your work so far Matt, I appreciate it!

As for another suggestion, I'm seeing quite a few users who still have old ranks, or are missing new ranks on the forums, as well as redundancy. I'll list a few examples below, but I believe there are more I'm forgetting at the moment.
    • rofellner - Not listed in staff members - Has admin roles but does not have the staff member role that allows users to see them in the online staff list.
    • Zylexx - Not listed in staff members, missing Helper role
    • ergology - Mod role redundant, missing Server Admin role
    • Walrus - No longer needs Staff Member and Helper roles
    • DodgerJ - No longer needs YouTube or Events roles

    Heyo

Those peoples ranks have been updated. Walrus totally slipped my mind xD
Zylexx just got accepted again so after his trial all of that will be set. Ergo seems to be alright, cant edit him anyways xD

Thanks for all the work so far Matt!

    Another few things:
    • Now that Notion MC is out of its beta phase, probably a good time to shut down the board and the application threads?
    • Potentially a good idea to add an "all members" button to the members page? Very annoying we can only find users by searching them or if they're a top poster/staff.
    • Quite a few posts lying around that reference the old hub method of the server. Things like the rules posts referring to "Applicable in all servers like Skyblock as well" that could be neatened up to cut down confusion. I can gather an exact list of all these posts if you'd like.
    • EDIT: Was peeking at the staff list to see if there's any stragglers that still have staff permission on it in reference to the posts we made before this. Quite a few users that need their ranks set back. /HERE/ is a link.
    Cheers,
    Reg
